What are the good sizes for Flux?

Postby Superman » Mon Apr 26, 2010 3:53 am

Hi guys, I would like to know the good sizes for our beginner's kite Flux. What do you think about it? Thank you.

1.2m ... For very young fliers, or very light weight fliers who want more of a stunt kite to teach 4 line control with. Lunatic wind advanced fliers kite.
2m ... For the advanced flier looking for a high wind kite and good starter size for younger fliers.
3m ... Recommended maximum size for a first kite.
5m ... The next step to a bigger kite.
7m ... Low wind alternative.

Dan I would have thrown a 4m in there as well, when recommending to fliers an ideal kite size its usually 3 - 4m and I think 4m is probably the most popular of kite sizes sold.

I've always considered 4m a bit much for a novice and 3-4-5 to me has a little too much overlap. All points are valid though, just as long as we don't get the half sizes in between as well. :D

Yup agree with above
4m ... good size for moderate winds 20mph ish
5m ... The next step to a bigger kite.
7m ... Low wind alternative.

could have done with a 1.2 a few weeks ago when it was blowing around 45mph just a bit much for the 2m ace :D

I would maybe try and increase the wind range of this set a bit as I alwys found having nothing bigger than my 7m Buster II a bit frustrating. My 5.5 m razor had more power in the same wind speed.

My sizes would be

1.2m
2m
3m
4m
5.5m
7m
8m

Gives you a bit more of a wind range.

as this is aimed at beginners I'd say 8m has little value.
if they reach that point its time to get an Ace IMHO

Once you get passed 7m, my feeling is that you need to start looking at changing the material to something lighter or there are problems launching the kite. Light wind flying is a skill in itself. Anyone who can keep a kite pulling in these conditions is beyond "beginner" in my opinion.

Maybe bigger sizes could come later, depending upon demand for them (and material availability). There is certainly a recreational market for large low lift kites for buggy and board.... easy cruising in light winds.

I'm sure Pansh will weigh all these discussions and make an informed decision. :D

i agree with the above and a 7m would be sweet (curently missing from my quiver) i think the 8m might be a good one to try one as i don't like the scary lift of the ace's. the 1.2m is a great idea for the young un's to have a go with

If there made of the same material as the ptp ones the larger sizes should not be a problem imho

Hope they go on sale soon itching to get a couple :D

I also think that 4m is a great size and would not be too big for a beginners first kite, as long as it was a Flux. My friend and I learned on a 4.5m Legend, there was a learning curve but after a couple of days we were flying it very effectively. The kite by its self isn't too big or too small for a beginner I think, as long as the wind is the right amount. I have first time flyer friends that find it very difficult to learn to fly on my 4m Ace, and cannot what so ever fly my 2.3m Spirit. I just got the 4m Flux PtP kite this weekend and have flown it a couple times now. My girlfriend flew it too and I can say this is a great beginner kite/size. Its easy to keep in the air and once you're comfortable driving it aggressively, can really get you scuddling across the ground. I dont think a beginner would want to take the 4m over 10-12 mph; but here inland, like I imagine a lot of people are, the wind doesn't frequently get a lot over that anyway. I think 3m and 5m would be nice as well, but I hope the 4m Flux sticks around too :D I know I'll enjoy my PtP Flux this month!

I recon the 1.2 is next to useless for anything more than a 10 yr old, the 8m would also be next to useless as a product I would try to sell. The 5.5 might as well be a 5 to sit in the quiver so i totaly agree with younged but it would look like this:
2
3
4
5
6
7
simplz! ( simple to make translation easier)

Exactly why I wanted that size, for the 7 to 11 year old children flying with parents.

Hi all,

TIme for me to comment :)

I see they do - and have been very tempted to buy - a 1.4m Beamer. I have kids and friends who when it gets a bit blowey are fightened even of a 2m Legend. So I think a smaller kite (on four lines) is a good idea.

Off topic I know but how are the lines and handles these days '?

The lines are fine I've never had any problems with them and the handles are a little softer but not much, I don't really notice the handles so much as I fly hooked in so all the pull of the kite is not going through your hands and arms.

i agree with the above comments, and my flux (4.7) is flying really well and is getting a lot of use the lines and handles are ok to..

I'd go for five sizes sorted by colour:

2.2m - Black
3.3m - Black
4.4m - Black
5.5m - Black
6.6m - Black

Simples!

All the best

PS - Betcha didn't see that coming! ;)
