Well I still cant quite belive that I have managed to win the PKA Open class overall this year. The idea was to start racing, take it all in learn a bit or alot and just to try not to finish last in my first year. All that got blown out of the window after the first 2 rounds. To say i was amazed to come 3rd at hoylake and then 2nd at the pembrey rounds is an understatement and then looking at the overall standings i found myself leading Open class. The last round at Pendine this weekend was a bit of a mare, the wind was offshore and gusting anywhere between 7 and 27 mph which made kite choice a nightmare. I struggled around with various kites from the 4m to the 6m and to say it was a bit hairy on the 6 is an understatement. I knew my closest rival was out and doing quite well so just got out there and kept going for as long as I could. After a day to forget I thought I has thrown away the chance of the overall win for sure and was just waiting for confirmation at the presentation in the evening.
Well it couldnt have been closer, at the presentation we found out that it was a tie for first on points and that I had won it on the count back of class wins for the year
Well that was me happy as a pig in s***, for anyone who wants to try racing just get out there and do it. You will meet loads of great people who are more than willing to help you out and give you loads of good advice and make the race weekends go with loads of laugh's.
A big Thank You must go to Pansh for there sponsorship with a great set of kites that have made this year possible, and to all of the lads in the Pansh race team who have been ful of helpful advice.
Also a big thanks to the guys and girls at the PKA for organising such a fun race series. Just have to get out and try out my prize of a lovely new Peter Lynn harness now.
Oh and next year im in for a shock as I have to race with the big boys in Masters class
